The 10th Anniversary of 9/11 – Don’t look too closely…

September 11, 2011

This year I just wanted to get through the 10th anniversary of 9/11… There was a fatigue in me that I think the entire country is sharing that made me want to turn away and move on.   Days like this are days of reflection.  And given the state of the world our country, the environment and the economy perhaps I thought it was best not to reflect too carefully.  After all, we know what we are going to see and it isn’t pretty.  It is perhaps best that we pass this one by quickly and not stare at the reflection too carefully.

Getting rid of “Second Amendment Solutions” without getting rid of assault rifles.

In the aftermath of the attempted assassination of AZ Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords  – even republicans are looking for ways to control firearms.  Dan Burton has suggested  that a plexi-glass dome separate  the public gallery from the Congressional members.  Republican Congressman Peter King wants to make it a federal offense to carry a weapon within 1000 feet of an elected official.

Tax Cuts vs. Health Care for First Responders:

Since the republicans came roaring back into power after the mid-term elections – the 911 first responders bill is  taking a back seat to tax cuts. This is nothing new. Even as a minority party republicans used the filibuster rule to stop debate on this issue several times.   But to put such important legislation on the back burner to the point of deliberately holding it up until democrats give the top 2% the tax cuts they wanted is another step towards the surreal that I find hard to fathom.

BOO!! The Silly Season of Politics Becomes the Scary Season

November 2, 2010

This year started out as the “silly season” of politics. The crazies on the right set the stage with such candidates as a far-right whacko Sharron Angle who wants to obliterate the department of education, social security, medicare, along with the department of weights and measures.  Yeah – that makes sense. When everyone  has a mixed idea  of what a pound actually is and your house collapses because the cement in the foundation wasn’t dense enough, or if a 2 by 4 ends up being a 1 by 3 so the rafters of your roof  cave in  – you’ll know who to blame. But I digress.
