You call this news? The science of smoke and mirrors…

A few days ago I came across an article in the Guardian about how republican presidential candidates are getting away with such a blatant denial of scientific consensus on issues like evolution and climate change. They rightly disparaged the republican “clown car” of presidential candidates, particularly with regard to their standing on key scientific issues.

The article correctly points out that conservatives create “wedge issues” out of science by shifting the emphasis from “science” to “values” and a big dose of  religious fundamentalism.  So science denial becomes less about science and facts and more about morality and closely held religious convictions.

When the journalism morphs into propaganda…

The thing that the article misses entirely is  that this can only happen in a country where “news” has largely been replaced by propaganda.  This is perhaps because Rupert Murdoch  got his start in the UK and they fail to recognize the news for what it has become – which is propaganda.

Although science denialism is a bird that would never fly  in the UK, the mechanism which keeps the Tories in power and economically damaging austerity measures alive and well there is the same as the one which has created a happy home for climate change denial and creationism in the US.  Fox news is nothing more than a bait and switch for those blessed with weak minds and penchant for willful ignorance.

Blurring facts with opinions…

Daniel Patrick Moynihan  is perhaps most remembered for his famous quote: “Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts.”  But our friends at Fox news are turning the tables on Moynihan, disabusing those of us with solid gray matter of the notion that “facts” can’t be made up.

That’s the goal of propaganda.  Bait, switch and misinform. It works in the US and the UK, but has been stepped up about 10 notches in the US.  It is dangerous because what the ignorant don’t know (or willfully deny) can kill us all.

The United States invasion of  Texas…

In order to see understand just  how far propaganda can take things I will leave you with the a story about a military exercise  that conservative media have managed to  morph into a purported US invasion of Texas. Thursday night  I was listening to MSNBC when Matthews began his show by saying “Is the United States about to invade Texas?….Lets play Hardball!”

Huh?  Say What?  I jerked my head up to watch.  Apparently a right wing group thinks that military exercises planned in Texas for this summer are an attempt by Obama to invade the state and invoke martial law. TX republican congressman Louie Gonmert and TX Gov. Greg Abbott are fanning the flames and milking this for all its worth.  The scary thing being that the idea has legs.

If your head isn’t spinning already,  I will leave you with this question:  If propaganda can convince a substantial portion of our population  that our military is about to invade Texas, does science even have a chance?  The rest I leave to Jon Stewart…
