911 – First Responders Redux – They have to prove they aren’t terorists…

Its been a while since I posted – and I’m trying to get back into the swing of things.

Its a scary world when we get some of our best information from the likes of Comedy Central.   But Jon Stewart made me aware of a bizarre amendment to the 911- First Responders Bill.  Of course this twist is so bizarre – perhaps this is the most appropriate place for such a report.  Apparently a late amendment to the bill forces first responders to prove they are not terrorists before receiving benefits.

This was pretty much the final straw for one the most tortured pieces of legislation known to man.   Also known as the Zadroga bill after James Zadroga who was a New York City Policeman and whose death  from respiratory illness  was among the first to be attributed specifically to his rescue work at the World Trade Center in 2001.

Passage of this bill should have been a no-brainer.  As those who bravely put their lives on the line during the attacks of 911 were becoming permanently disabled and fatally ill due to their exposure to toxins on the site, it became apparent that their medical coverage was leaving them and their families destitute.  As the families of 911  first responders were losing their homes – the bill languished in Congress due to the threat of a republican filibuster.   The entire sordid mess was a disgrace.    Jon Stewart of the Daily Show – took up the cause last fall and his actions on his comedy show helped push the bill through.

So this final twist shouldn’t surprise us.  What should surprise us is that this was not reported widely by the mainstream media…But here are the clips from the Daily Show that state the facts and show the absurdity of the situation better than I possibly could…

Hey, I have been a bit concerned about you. Good to have you back. We need a Mt. Rushmore (must find another name) for satirists. Stewart and Colbert should go up first. Did you get my invite to The Book of Jerry?

Hi Celtis – I’m having trouble with that email address. I have to figure it out. You can send it to Ruthmarie.Hicks@gmail.com. That’s the address for my real estate blog (the cause of my lack of attention to this blog!) I’m trying to keep the two worlds separate, but Gmail keeps logging me off the other address I can barely get to the mail.
